We're Giant Fans of Community Participation

Keep Crocker Real has grown to over 300 people with the majority living close to the park. Our community outreach has inspired more than 4,000 letters to the Rec Park Commission voicing opposition to the current renovation. We have over 10,000 signatures on our petitions calling for a halt to artificial turf. We have over 50 local, regional and national organizations endorsing our city-wide moratorium on artificial turf including the Natural Resource Defense Council, Baykeeper, Clean Water Action and the Refuse/Refuse.

Neighborhood park for gathering and sports, local Excelsior, Vis Valley, Portola culture.

Beautiful trees, peaceful place to walk, listen to birdsong, be in a natural green space and breathe — somewhere to see neighbors exercise — seniors doing Tai Chi or zumba in the morning, a gathering place for the community.

Nature, this is an amazing oasis in an urban landscape, we need it to remain grassy and filled with critters, birds, and butterflies, so we all can enjoy this treasure.

Every year at my elementary school, we have our Field Day event at Crocker Amazon park, because it provides the best conditions in the area for our children to participate in events. Everyone here can agree that the park could use some rehabilitation, however it is very important to our neighborhood that this place remains a natural open space where our children can play sports like baseball without worrying about excess heat and abrasions from artificial turf. Specifically, the installation of artificial turf and the removal of many large trees, would not improve Crocker Amazon Park. I am dismayed by the idea that many of the great shade trees which have been here for more years than most of us have been alive, would be cut down without an adequate reason to do so, other than to make space for the renovated fields. I believe those actions are unnecessary, harmful, and shortsighted.

A piece of nature in a very urban area. One that also provides space for soccer and baseball while respecting the need to have natural, open spaces for the many people who walk exercise and rejuvenate.

Trees.

I am so grateful that it has trees and plants in one of the least canopied, most egregious tree desert neighborhood which has significant health impacts on all residents. Nature is an investment in all our health, happiness, and well being. Our common outdoor areas must be protected and enhanced for the enjoyment of all and for the bridging of connection, social heath and protective factors for democracy. Public parks are one of the few places people can meet each other and overcome differences. Turning the park into a plastic graveyard is not consistent with the spirit of Excelsior or the ethos of San Francisco. Our two young daughters are athletic. ASL tears disproportionately affect girls, and are of much higher risk on plastic turf.

It's an intergenerational park used for so many things. I walk there every day during my lunch break and come across people doing zumba classes, or elders playing bingo, dog walkers, kids practicing and training for football, rugby players, frisbee players, etc.

A park! In the 2nd densest city in the United States of America, with a ratio of natural / green space to built space below the national average.
