The "Hours of Play" Myth
1. Grass Can Match Play Hours with Modern Management
- Sand-capped natural grass fields (used in pro sports) drain quickly and can be playable within hours after rain.
- Advances in soil engineering, irrigation, and grass varieties allow natural fields to handle high-intensity use with far fewer closures.
- Case study examples (like the Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park or professional stadiums) show natural grass fields hosting hundreds of events per year.
2. Artificial Turf's "More Hours" Claim is Misleading
- Turf fields also need downtime: they get dangerously hot in warm weather, requiring closure, and require "rest" after heavy use to prevent seam separation or infill displacement.
- They wear unevenly, often leading to shortened lifespans and expensive partial closures or early replacement.
- Extreme use accelerates breakdown of plastic fibers, creating more microplastic pollution.
3. Health and Safety Reduce Usable Hours
- Artificial turf increases risk of heat stress, burns, and joint injuries, limiting safe playtime, especially for children.
- During high-heat days, turf can reach 150°-180°F, making it unusable exactly when kids are most available to play.
4. Natural Grass Provides Multipurpose Community Benefits
- Grass fields provide cooling, stormwater absorption, carbon storage, and wildlife habitat even when not in play.
- Families and community members can use grass fields for picnics, walking, and informal recreation—uses that are limited or unpleasant on turf.
- These benefits expand the "hours of use" concept beyond organized sports to whole-community value.
5. Equity and Cost Efficiency
- Artificial turf fields cost millions upfront and hundreds of thousands to dispose and replace every 8-10 years.
- For the same money, cities can maintain multiple natural grass fields at high quality, spreading access across neighborhoods.
- Equity is better served by more playable grass fields citywide than a handful of expensive turf sites.
6. Reframe the Question
Instead of asking: "Which field type allows the most hours of organized play?"
Ask: "Which fields provide the most safe, healthy, and sustainable access for the most people, for the longest time?"
Natural grass wins when you factor in safety, environmental benefits, and community use.
